An eight-kilometres-long oil spot is moving by the Danube from Bulgaria in the direction of Ukraine, according to Itar-Tass. Men from the Izmail frontier guard detachment of the Southern Regional Department, Ukrainian Frontier Guard Troops, were the first to raise the alarm.

The Ukrainian embassy in Bulgaria confirmed the report about the oil spot, a representative of the Emergencies Ministry of Ukraine told Itar-Tass on Wednesday. According to their information, the oil spot “with a low concentration, eight kilometres long and 100 metres wide” emerged late in October as a result of the discharge of waste liquid into the Danube by some unidentified boat near the city of Vidin, Bulgaria.

When moving towards the Black Sea, the oil spot is being split up into small fragments. Bulgarian officials believe the oil spot “does not create a threat for the water and the banks of the Danube.”

Nevertheless, the local authorities of the Ukrainian cities, situated on the banks of the Danube, began the monitoring of the situation in the river. Numerous water samples are being taken near the cities of Reni, Izmail, Kiiliya and Vilkovo.

A major trans-border pollution of the Danube with oil products took place early in October. As a result of the leakage of oil products at the oil terminal in Prahovo, Serbia, an oil spot with the size of 20 kilometres per 100 metres was formed in the river, which polluted the banks of the nearby Danube cities.
