Victor Yushchenko has asked the Constitutional Court of Ukraine to analyze the constitutionality of yesterday’s parliamentary vote to suspend Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko from his post, according to the President`s press-office.

“I am convinced this decision is illegal and so I have sent a letter to the Constitutional Court to classify it,” he told reporters in Ivano-Frankivsk on Friday.

The President described the vote as non-productive and said it posed a threat to Ukraine’s democratic gains and ideals of freedom. He believes it shows that the country still has parliamentary forces that can make reactionary decisions, which are inconsistent with the goal to preserve political stability. Thus he urged parliamentarians not to vote emotionally, adding that “such moves do not help consolidate political forces.”

Mr. Yushchenko also said he saw yesterday’s decision as an attempt to monopolize the law enforcement system. He criticized Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and Parliamentary Speaker Oleksandr Moroz for their position on the vote.

The President reiterated that he was pleased with Yuriy Lutsenko’s performance and said the minister was apolitical and worked transparently and honestly.
